FDA Requires Black Box Warning Label Against Fluoroquinolone Side Effects

The FDA released a Black Box Warning on the side effects of  fluoroquinolones in 2017, but many physicians across the United States are still prescribing these antibiotics despite the dangers of antibiotics they were warned about. In our practice, we have treated over 800 patients with fluoroquinolone toxicity and not one patient was able to show us a documented culture to show a bacterial infection that was sensitive to Cipro or Levaquin.  We estimate Cipro or Levaquin is used appropriately less than 1% of the time. There are thousands of individuals in online forums who have become severely disabled from this class of antibiotics.

Many who consume fluoroquinolone antibiotics and do not have disabling side effects. This is because everyone has a different genetic makeup and the cumulative effect takes time. We do believe everyone is affected in some way due to mitochondrial damage on a cellular level with DNA adduct formation, this means the antibiotics can alter the DNA leading to permanent damage.

Fluoroquinolone Side Effects FAQ

How Long After Experiencing Fluoroquinolone Side Effects Should I See a Doctor?

You should see a functional medicine doctor immediately after being poisoned by Fluoroquinolone Toxicity. The sooner you stop the mitochondrial damage and damage to your DNA, the better your chances will be. Traditional medicine will have no answer other than to give you an MRI with contrast which can lead to permanent neuropathy, steroids which can lead to diffuse muscle atrophy and tendon rupture, or ibuprofen which can cause severe neurological disturbances after experiencing side effects from fluoroquinolones.

Are There Any Alternatives to Fluoroquinolone?

Yes, any other antibiotic on the market is safer than fluoroquinolones. Make sure your doctor is treating a bacterial infection, not a viral infection or is just guessing. Obtain a confirmed culture with sensitivity showing there are no other options besides fluoroquinolones when deciding to start this class of medications. If you combine a fluoroquinolone with steroids like prednisone or ibuprofen, you run a very high risk of experiencing permanent debilitating symptoms.

If you think you or someone you love, may have Fluoroquinolone Toxicity Syndrome or are living with ongoing symptoms similar to those caused by Cipro, Levaquin, or Avelox, or any other antibiotic please call Regenerative Medicine LA immediately or schedule a consultation online.
