Understanding Candida

Candida is one of the many fungi that dwell inside and all over the human body. It is named after the genus of yeast candida.

The Candida yeast is found in small quantities in certain parts of the body such as the mouth, intestines and on the skin. Normal amounts of this fungi in and on the body does not pose any problems or threats of illness. However, when the Candida fungi start growing at an uncontrollable pace, it leads to a condition called candidiasis. This disease is often referred to as Candida in short. Candida is one of the most common causes of fungal infections that humans suffer from.

What causes the overgrowth of Candida?

As mentioned before, the human body functions perfectly well with normal levels of Candida. However, it is only when the overgrowth creates illnesses such as yeast infections, oral thrush, and chronic fatigue, among others, that you know that the fungi have increased more than it should.

One of the most common reasons causing candidiasis is a weakened immune system. The healthy bacteria in our body keeps the levels of candida in control. However, in case of illness, when our immunity is compromised, the amounts of healthy bacteria go down in the body, which leaves the body exposed to the threats of increased amounts of the candida fungi. This happens particularly when the patient is on antibiotics. This is also one of the reasons why doctors prescribe probiotics along with antibiotics to improve gut flora.

Here are some other factors that might lead to an increase in Candida growth in the body:
  • Eating a high-sugar diet
  • Consuming refined carbs
  • Weakened immune system
  • Diabetes
  • High-stress levels
  • High alcohol intake
  • Taking oral contraceptives

What are the symptoms of Candida?

Candida overgrowth in the mouth and throat is known as oral thrush. They can be recognized by the rough white patches that develop on the patient’s gum, tongue, tonsils, throat, and inner cheek. Thrushes are most common in newborns and the elderly, and individuals with a weakened immune system. People with poor oral hygiene and ones using removable dentures also suffer from oral thrush, often. The bumpy lesions can be very painful and may even bleed if scraped slightly.

Extreme cases might lead to the overgrowth reaching the throat and esophagus, which might make swallowing extremely difficult.

Although candida doesn’t cause fatigue directly, there are some ways it might lead to constant fatigue. Candida often goes hand-in-hand with nutritional deficiencies like magnesium, essential fatty acids, and vitamin B6 deficiencies. Lack of suitable levels of magnesium regularly contributes to chronic fatigue.

Recurring genital and urinary tract infection is a common symptom of candida. Candida is found in the vaginal tract of most women. The overgrowth of the same cause of genital and urinary tract infections.

The digestive system thrives when there is a perfect balance between both good and bad bacteria. However, when good bacteria are overpowered by candida overgrowth, patients might experience constipation, nausea, diarrhea, bloating, and cramps.

Apart from the above mentioned, four common candida symptoms are sinus infections, nail, and skin fungal infections, and joint pain.

Gluten Intolerance

In certain individuals, the gluten protein causes an autoimmune inflammatory response when gluten is consumed. One theory is a leaky gut may lead to Celiac disease if the body is exposed to gluten. Even though the classic antibodies for celiac disease are negative, gluten may still lead to inflammation and can worsen existing autoimmune disease.

Candida Overgrowth

Yeast overgrowth is a very serious problem in the medical community. Every time a patient is given antibiotics, the risk of candida overgrowth in the gut rises exponentially. A woman having a vaginal yeast infection is a sign of heavy yeast overgrowth in the gut. Symptoms of chronic candida are brain fog, fatigue, weakness, and loss of energy to name a few. Regenerative Medicine LA offers Candida testing and our effective yeast fighting protocol program.
