Long COVID: Searching for Answers

Long COVID has become one of the most confusing and misunderstood conditions in medicine. Healthy patients are now crippled with fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath and unexplained pain – sometimes for months or even years after their initial infection.

Mainstream medicine has failed to provide an answer. Patients are dismissed, told it’s all in their head or prescribed meds that just mask symptoms instead of addressing the root cause.

But as a regenerative medicine physician I look beyond traditional pharmaceuticals for real science based solutions. One emerging treatment that’s getting attention is nattokinase – a natural enzyme that may help break down spike protein and help the body recover from Long COVID.

Spike Protein and Long COVID

Many researchers now believe spike protein is the key to Long COVID.

When you get infected with SARS-CoV-2 (or receive an mRNA vaccine) your body is exposed to spike protein which triggers an immune response. Most people clear it after recovery but in some individuals spike protein lingers in the body causing:

  • Chronic inflammation – fatigue, joint pain, brain fog
  • Microclots and circulation issues – dizziness, shortness of breath, muscle weakness
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction – low energy and neurological issues
  • Immune system dysregulation – the body is in a state of constant overactivation

For Long COVID patients eliminating residual spike protein may be the key to recovery.

What is Nattokinase?

Nattokinase is a powerful enzyme derived from natto, a fermented soybean dish commonly consumed in Japan. It’s been studied for its fibrinolytic (clot busting) and anti-inflammatory properties but recent research suggests it may also break down and clear spike protein from the body.

How Nattokinase Works

  • Breaks Down Fibrin and Microclots – Long COVID is associated with microclot formation which impairs circulation and oxygen delivery. Nattokinase dissolves these microclots and restores normal blood flow.
  • Clears Persistent Spike Protein – A study published in Heliyon found nattokinase degrades the spike protein which may reduce its lingering effects in the body.
  • Reduces Inflammation – Long COVID symptoms are driven by chronic inflammation. Nattokinase has natural anti-inflammatory properties that may calm the immune system and promote healing.
  • Supports Mitochondrial Function – By improving circulation and reducing oxidative stress nattokinase may help restore cellular energy production and address fatigue and brain fog in Long COVID.

What the Research Says

More studies are needed but preliminary data looks good:

  • A 2023 study in Heliyon found nattokinase can break down SARS-CoV-2 spike protein which may clear out viral remnants in Long COVID patients.
  • Other studies on nattokinase and fibrinolysis show it helps improve circulation and dissolve clotting abnormalities – a major issue in Long COVID.
  • Long COVID patients using nattokinase are reporting improvements in brain fog, circulation and energy.

This doesn’t mean nattokinase is a cure but it does suggest spike protein clearance is a missing piece in Long COVID recovery.

My Experience with Nattokinase in Patients

At Regenerative Medicine LA I’ve worked with hundreds of Long COVID patients who’ve tried everything medical without relief. I’ve found a multi-faceted approach with nattokinase makes a difference.

For patients with persistent fatigue, microclot symptoms and cognitive dysfunction nattokinase has been an addition to their recovery plan. Many report:

  • More energy and less fatigue
  • Improved circulation – less dizziness and cold extremities
  • Less brain fog and clearer mental function
  • Better exercise tolerance and endurance

Of course nattokinase isn’t a one size fits all solution. Each patient is unique and Long COVID requires a comprehensive approach to healing.

How to Use Nattokinase for Long COVID

If you’re considering nattokinase for spike protein clearance here are some things to consider:

1. Choose a Good Supplement

  • Look for a nattokinase supplement with at least 2,000 FU (fibrinolytic units) per serving.
  • Avoid brands with fillers or extras.

2. Take on an Empty Stomach

  • Nattokinase is best absorbed when taken away from food – usually first thing in the morning or before bed.

3. Be Patient

  • Some patients notice improvements in a few weeks, others may take longer.
  • Track your symptoms to see what works.

4. Use with Other Healing Strategies

For best results nattokinase should be used with:

  • Mitochondrial support: CoQ10, NAD+, glutathione
  • Anti-inflammatory diet: Whole foods, omega-3s, polyphenols
  • Hydration and circulation support: Magnesium, exercise, sauna therapy

Is Nattokinase Safe?

Nattokinase is generally safe but there are some precautions:

  • If you’re on blood thinners (Warfarin or aspirin) consult your doctor before using nattokinase.
  • If you have a bleeding disorder or are having surgery avoid nattokinase.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider.

As with any supplement, talk to a knowledgeable practitioner before using nattokinase especially if you have underlying health conditions.

A New Way to Approach Long COVID?

Long COVID is a complicated and frustrating condition but we’re starting to find answers.

I think nattokinase could be a game changer in helping patients clear spike protein, improve circulation and get their life back.

If you’re dealing with Long COVID symptoms and traditional medicine has left you with no answers there is hope. The answer to recovery lies in understanding and addressing the root cause, not just the symptoms.
